I Have Had Singing

The singing.
There was so much singing then,
and this was my pleasure too.
We all sang,
The boys in the fields,
The chapels were full of singing,
always singing.

Here I lie.
I have had pleasure enough.

I have had singing.

Composer Notes:

When I was in high school, I had the privilege of hearing The Singing Statesmen, from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, on their statewide tour. I remember their concert starting with a jolt of energy as I watched a bunch of tenors and basses run onto the risers (as they traditionally did). The performance was filled with beautiful musicianship, engagement and joy; however, it wasn’t until they sang their last piece that I felt emotionally impacted. They ended with a piece that used the text, “I Have Had Singing.” I went home, purchased a recording on itunes, and immediately wanted to be a part of the UW-Eau Claire tradition.

My undergrad, at Eau Claire, was some of the best years of my life. I was a part of The Singing Statesmen every year, which was under the direction of Dr. Gary Schwartzhoff. We went on many regional tours and one international tour. Some beautiful friendships were made and I additionally began to discover what I was passionate about in music. My time in Eau Claire is a huge reason I am where I am. It was the people who helped me to get where I am now and I am eternally grateful.

When I was asked to write a piece for the school district of Eau Claire, I had no other text in mind other than the words of, “I Have Had Singing.” This piece is a reminder of the connections we always will have through singing. Voices of our past, present and future will always carry with us and shape us to be who we are today. Being in a choir is more than just singing, it is a bond that goes beyond the explanation of words.
