The Lamb
Little Lamb who made thee
         Dost thou know who made thee
Gave thee life & bid thee feed.
By the stream & o'er the mead;
Gave thee clothing of delight,
Softest clothing wooly bright;
Gave thee such a tender voice,
Making all the vales rejoice!
         Little Lamb who made thee
         Dost thou know who made thee
         Little Lamb I'll tell thee,
         Little Lamb I'll tell thee!
He is called by thy name,
For he calls himself a Lamb:
He is meek & he is mild,
He became a little child:
I a child & thou a lamb,
We are called by his name.
         Little Lamb God bless thee.
         Little Lamb God bless thee.
-William Blake

Composer Notes:

Knowing the sound world that I had created for the Tyger, I knew that the Lamb had to be the direct opposite. The piece had to be warm, lyrical and comforting. About two years ago, I had created the main melody of the Lamb; however, I never wrote it down until I was commissioned by the Symphonic Chorale of Southern Florida. To be honest, I try not to write down most of my ideas until after a significant amount of time has passed. I figure if I do this, the bad ideas will simply be unmemorable while the good ones will stick around no matter how long I wait. While writing this composition, one piece of the poem that I wanted to capture was the idea of God becoming a child. In this piece I periodically switch between 3/4 and 4/4 to represent the trinity and man becoming one. I truly believe that audiences will enjoy both the delicacy and magnificence found within the purity of “The Lamb.”
