Movement I: Son of a Bee

Duration ca. 2:05

This movement is a comical depiction of the first time I was stung by a bee. On that particular day I was in the woods, behind my parents house, creating paths with my friends. We were clumsily chopping wood and running around all day. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, a bee came and stung me in the ear. I remember very clearly pausing, comprehending that I was stung, and then frantically tearing out of those woods crying. Looking back, I find it sort of funny how a little stinger caused such a dramatic scene.

Movement II: Is There No Such Thing?

Duration ca. 3:27

This movement depicts a tough conversation I had with my mother, in December, my fifth grade year. Without saying too much, many of my friends were beginning to spread rumors about a certain someone related to that month. In this composition a loss of innocence is depicted through the shift from chromaticism to consonance as my character begins to accept the hard and sad truth. Note the differences between the child (in the right hand) and the parent (in the left hand) and how the child’s theme becomes less imaginative through the duration of the piece. Truly, a slight emptiness was felt in my heart that year.

Movement III: A Fall From Innocence

Duration ca. 2:18

Every person has experienced a moment in their life that was surreal and shook them to their core. This piece is to depict that true loss of innocence. That moment when you realized the world is not always a magical place. This piece does describe a very specific moment for myself; however, I hope that the disorientation of descending tritones and harsh crashes captures this universal moment for whatever the listener’s given situation was.

Movement IV: A Reflection On Lost Time

Duration ca. 5:09

When looking back on my middle school experience, I realized I lost a lot of who I was. To be specific, I quit music my eighth grade year, decided to take two physical education classes and be a teacher’s assistant for another physical education class. I became huge into sports and took the arts less seriously. The whole experience honestly feels like a gray blur to me with snapshots of empty moments. Yes, there were many fun moments still with friends, but who I am today felt very little like who I was in middle school. Movement VI transitions directly into Movement V.

Movement V: A Serotinous Spirit

Duration ca. 3:32

The final movement captures the moment when I found music again in my life. This piece is filled with lush harmony and is slightly inspired by the whimsical nature of many romantic composers. I always found a type of magic in that style of writing and I wanted to draw inspiration from those composers to depict the magic of music coming back into my life. There is no greater feeling than your spirit opening up and becoming who you truly were meant to be.
